Fuckup Ranch EST. EVENTUALLY

A barndominium on a few acres where three old nerds retire together instead of apart. One big steel barn with three identical suites, a three-car garage, a room just for the servers, its own power, and a guild stone out front.

The Barn

A 44 × 90 post-frame building. A hall runs the length of the house with a door at each end. Three identical suites, each with a full bath and its own door to the outside, open off one side of it. The server room, The Battleground, the kitchen and the living room open off the other. Coming in from the garage, you pass through the mudroom into the kitchen, and guests get their own bathroom off the living room.

Low voltage

The Network

Every room gets its own fiber run from the server room and its own access switch. Each resident lives on a separate VLAN, and the firewall keeps them apart. Everyone can still reach the internet, the servers and The Battleground. The internet comes in over two 10G circuits from different providers on opposite sides of the property, with Starlink as the last resort.

Off the grid when it counts

Power

A battery bank that can run the whole ranch for 36 hours, servers included, and enough solar on the roof to power everything. The grid becomes the backup.

Battery runtime
36 hours, whole house
Battery size
About 110 kWh, at an average 3 kW draw
Location
Battery wall along the garage's west side
Solar
About 18 kW on the south roof, sized to cover a full day's use
Daily use
About 72 kWh

Sizes are estimates for planning. The real numbers come from an actual load calculation.

House rules

Ranch Rules

  1. Every room gets fiber and its own switch. Wi-Fi is for guests.
  2. Don't make the place smell like you wiped your ass with a kiwi. And no microwave pork rinds.
  3. Thursday is game night in The Battleground. Showing up is optional. Heckling is mandatory.
  4. Break it, write the postmortem. Blameless, but you still have to write it.
  5. Nobody gets kicked off the ranch. You can't walk home, because you're already there.
